He later received a standing ovation from party peers for his winning performance in the marginal seat of Page, rubbing shoulders with new PM Tony Abbott and neighbouring Nationals MP and former Senator Barnaby Joyce.

Speaking from a colleague's Parliament House office, Mr Hogan described his first week on the job as "absolutely full on".

"People are calling me, texting me, emailing me - as they should be - wanting me to do things for them," he said.

He said "literally hundreds of emails" that needed his attention would take most of next week.

Until the vote is declared by the electoral commission, Mr Hogan remains only the member-elect for Page, without a Parliament House office, resources or staff.

"It's really on the run at the moment until I get set up," he said.

"I'm hoping the poll's declared next week so we can actually move into the office."

Mr Hogan said fellow MPs had been "very congratula- tory" of his achievement in winning the bellwether seat.

"It's obviously a big deal to win a seat from the other side," he said.

"People knew that I was up against an MP who had a good reputation."

He also said he was surprised by the reception from Parliament House staff.

"It's amazing how many people know who you are, they say 'You're the new guy from Page'."

He said above all he was "humbled" by being elected.

"It's not lost on me that this community has bestowed upon me the honour of representing this community in Canberra."

"I need to start working straight away because there's lots we want to do."
