Mikayla destroys 200m record by 37s
IT would have been interesting to see the reaction of the Westlawn Public School swimming carnival timekeepers when Mikayla O'Mahony touched the wall first in the junior girl's 200-metre individual medley last Wednesday.
Did they rub their eyes with disbelief? Did they check their clocks for accuracy? Or did they simply ask each other 'could this be true?'
O'Mahony, clocking in at four minutes and nine seconds, had not just broken the junior girl's 200-metre individual medley record set by Sarah Kitcher two years ago, but destroyed it by more than 37 seconds.
O'Mahony, 9, who trains once a week with the Joe Claire-trained 'C' squad, said she loved to swim and was very proud to break the record. Amazingly, O'Mahony said it was the first time she had ever broken a record.
The 200-metre individual medley record was the icing on the cake for the Year 4 student, who was named Junior Girl Champion after adding to her tally wins in the 50-metre freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke and the 100-metre freestyle.
