How young is too young to be on the Voice Kids?

COMMENT BY KATHY SUNDSTROM: WATCHING the Voice Kids is like lying on my couch and gorging a giant box of Cadbury's Favourites.

It feels great while I'm doing it, but deep down I know it is not good and I'm going to feel sick afterwards

My feelings about the show, which seems to be insanely popular, have increased since my daughter has decided this is her "life's goal".

She has just turned six and she wants to be on the Voice Kids.

Seriously, what happened to kids aspiring to become doctors, teachers, lawyers or, dare I suggest, journalists?

Maybe it's watching these  tweens go "this is my dream, this is all I want to do" that makes other littlies think this is a noble idea.

Kyla has even started practicing her singing and wants to take vocal lessons to improve her chances.

Now I am all for kids having dreams and goals, particularly my own, but should they be trying to realize them when they are still kids?

Yes, she will love it if she gets in, but at what long term cost?

And where do we draw the line.

You have to be seven to enter, but I wonder if even that boundary will be crossed soon as people begun to realize the remarkable marketing opportunity of four-year-olds.

How, I wonder, does children making money in a television show differ to child slavery?

I honestly think Delta, Mel and the Madden brothers do a fantastic job of encouraging the kids, even those who don't make it through.

But I wonder at the long-term ramifications of putting kids in the public spotlight so early.

Not many childhood actors make it as an adult, are we ruining it for our talented young singers too?

There is plenty of time for people to shine, but there is only a limited opportunity for a person to be a kid.

Let them enjoy it, while they are able.
