A DISTURBING image of a dog huddled on the back dash of a car parked in sweltering Sunshine Coast conditions has been released by police as a warning to pet owners.

Police were about to take further action when the owner returned, narrowly dodging a fine.

Their explanation: "I just dashed to the toilet and couldn't take him with me".

Police are reminding pet owners that leaving animals in cars is not a responsible action, even if the window is left down a little.

"In Queensland, heat kills. Never leave a pet or a child alone in a car during summer," a police statement warned.

"Keeping a pet is a huge commitment and responsibility so do the right thing and plan your outings, and if need be, leave your pet at home.

"In these situations, locals are warned not to break car windows or enter vehicles that are not their own to rescue these pets."

Emergencies can be reported on 1300Animal or via Policelink on 131 444.
