School concerned ice is being given out cost free

ALARMING allegations that methylamphetamine, also known as ice, is being offered free of charge in Bowen have come to light.

Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney wrote to him that Bowen State High School had raised concerns with her about an "astounding and gravely concerning increase in the use of drugs, particularly ice".

Reports, obtained by the school, insinuated drugs were being given out cost free to be used by members of the community including students, Mr Christensen said.

This could possibly be a method to introduce and hook "vulnerable young people" to the drug. It could also be used by predators to "take advantage" of young women, he said.

MP's forums to help stamp out ice in Mackay region

Although it was only allegations at this stage, Mr Christensen said it was something to be alarmed by.

"Anecdotally, we're hearing the same thing in Mackay," he said.

A Department of Education and Training spokesperson said there had been no reports of ice possession at Bowen State High school.

"Bowen State High School has proactive support measures in place in accordance with departmental policy and the school's Responsible Behaviour Plan."

Mayor Jenny Whitney said she welcomed Mr Christensen's decision to hold round table discussions in Mackay and Bowen as the first step in bringing awareness of the "ice" issue to the communities and determining how to tackle this widespread issue in the future.
