Iluka-Woombah Men’s Shed opens next week
AFTER two years in the planning, the Iluka-Woombah Men's Shed will open its doors officially next Wednesday.
The brainchild of a 2011 discussion between shed committee president Jim Organ and John Laffan, now of Armidale, the Iluka-Woombah shed already has 22 members.
"Our villages have aging populations with a lot of retired tradesmen, so we're optimistic about the shed's future," Mr Organ said.
"It's 70km for the return trip to the nearest Men's Shed at Townsend so we are relatively isolated and having our own shed will make things far more accessible."
Insurance and membership came through the federally-funded Australian Men's Shed Association, of which the Iluka-Woombah shed is a member.
Mr Organ said he was expecting a couple of grants to come through for equipment but there was a lot of borrowed and donated gear already available.
He extended a public invitation to the opening ceremony in the shed at 243 Johnsons Ln, Iluka, at 10.30am next Wednesday.
Clarence Valley Mayor Richie Williamson and other council staff will attend and a sausage sizzle will follow. Mr Organ said membership applications were open till June 30 at the half-yearly rate of $18.
