Immigration must go

THE ever-increasing number of irregular arrivals of refugees (all of whom are of doubtful status until processed by the Department of Immigration) has now reached such proportions that it could bring down the Government. May I suggest that the government of the day dismantle the Department of Immigration and reduce its status to a division of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which has an authority overseas that the present set-up lacks, and surely that is a level where any government-to-government control agreements should be negotiated, at the country of origin.   Thomas Macindoe, Yamba
