Inching closer in quest for gold

IT WAS a successful day seven at the Paralympics for the Coffs Coast's Ben Newton and Bill Latham with Australia claiming big wins in the wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball.

Newton's Steelers defeated world number two Canada 64-52 in its wheelchair rugby pool match while Latham's Rollers tied up a semi final berth with a 76-53 win against Poland.

In the basketball, Latham played a solid 11 minutes off the bench and contributed five points and three rebounds.

Next on the schedule for the Rollers is a clash with world champions the United States tonight.

Newton failed to see much time on the court in the Steelers clash but with star player Ryley Batt in such hot form Australia is firming as one of the favourites for gold.

The Steelers next match is against Sweden.
