Indigenous people honour their dads after racist cartoon

POLITICIANS, television stars, doctors and artists are among hundreds of people who have gotten behind a social media movement praising Indigenous dads in the wake of a racist newspaper cartoon.

People such as Queensland MP Leeanne Enoch and television host Nathan Appo have joined in on the Twitter hashtag #indigenousdads to share photos of their fathers.

The movement was a response to a racist cartoon by Bill Leak published in The Australian last week that suggested Indigenous fathers didn't know the names of their own children.

The cartoon was widely condemned for its racist portrayal of Aboriginal people.

Twitter users began posting family photos to combat the stereotype portrayed in the cartoon.

Ms Enoch, who is the first female Indigenous MP to be elected in Queensland, shared a photo of her and her father at her university graduation ceremony.

Writer Ryan Griffin, the creator of the ABC's superhero drama Cleverman, tweeted a photo with his son.

Professor Megan Davis, a Professor of Law at the University of New South Wales and the Chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples, also showed her love for her dad using the hashtag.
