Damned if you do, damned if you don't: $300 insurance spike

HIKING private health insurance premiums 5.6% is a rip off, according to Mackay mum Amy Barclay.

Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley approved the 5.6% average increase earlier this month and it is set to come into play April.

The increase was tipped to cost the average family an extra $300 a year.

Even though Ms Barclay has low-range "extras only" cover, which cost $55 a month, she thought the value for money was already poor.

"It annoys me that they are increasing it," Ms Barclay said.

"I enquired about getting braces which cost about $10,000.

"My insurance would only pay $1500."

David and Diane Edwards urged the government to step in and stop the price hike.

"It's a rip off. But you can't afford not to have it at our age," Mr Edwards said.

"I don't think we get bang for our buck."

But pensioner Helene Greenhalch said she was happy to pay the increased premium to her insurance company, Queensland Country Health.

"I would praise them any old day. They're the best," she said.

She and her husband paid $306 a month but said over the long term the coverage had saved them thousands.

"He went in for a hip operation and was in for 11 days.

It would have cost $30,000 but they covered it all," Ms Greenhalch said.
