IT contractors' jobs cut

THE Queensland Government has justified cutting hundreds of information technology contractors loose with claims there is a $40,000-an-hour saving.

Information Technology Minister Ros Bates said contractors rates ranged from $600 to $1600 a day and the amount "being squandered" was "outrageous".

"Clearly, contactors should only be hired to service areas where the government doesn't already have the necessary skill set," she said.

But her comments come as an interim audit of the government's computer systems paints a bleak picture, with 997 applications not replaced when needed and 12 critical computer systems needing major upgrades.

Ms Bates said many of these systems would need to be upgraded, costing up to $6 million, before another health payroll debacle unfolded.

Almost 400 IT workers have been cut since the State Election in March.

A full audit will be handed down in October 30.
