OPINION: Don't have time? Ditch distractions and make some

IF THERE is one thing we all seem to be short of these days, it is time.

Well, that's what we all say.

As far as I can tell there are still 24 hours in a day and I'm pretty certain a shortage of time isn't our problem; it's the increased number of distractions - things like the internet; endless TV channels; being able to shop whenever we like.

So with the days getting warmer and longer, I reckon we should all be trying to claim back some of our time.

Let's ditch the distractions - not completely, but cut back on them - and get some time back for ourselves and our families, and get back to simpler living.

I thought about this while reading today's story about Peter Nicholson's call for a local beetroot grower to keep him supplied.

He hasn't been able to find anyone who can help, yet beet- root is one of the easiest crops to grow in a backyard.

That made me think that I have been living in my current house for about nine months but haven't even started a vegetable patch yet.

And I can't come up with a good reason why I haven't, except that I've been short of time.

Well that's no longer good enough in my life. If I don't have time for something as simple and beneficial as growing my own fruit and vegetables, then some other things will have to go.

I don't know if I'll be planting enough beets for the 25kg Peter needs, but it is definitely time to get outside and start digging.
