Ivorys too strong for Strongbows

ALTHOUGH both these teams play for the same club, there were still points up for grabs for the winner of this game.

Ultimately Ivorys defeated Strongbows 41-25, but it wasn’t till the final quarter that Ivorys gained the edge.

The game began with Ivorys’ Aimee Stevenson taking a number of great intercepts to give her team a slight lead within the first few minutes.

Stongbows’ Brooke Young fought hard to get the ball down to her end of the court to ensure the Strongbow shooters took every opportunity to take a shot. The score at the end of the first quarter 9-5 in favour of Ivorys.

Strongbows’ Toni Paine and Courtney Little made some strong plays for the ball, keeping Ivorys’ Kate Gordon and Pheobe Cooper-Jackson on their toes.

But with the combined defences of Ivory’s Jane Ryder and Karen Stevenson, Strongbow were unable to convert a number of their shots into goals. Ivorys again won the quarter to extend its lead to nine.

After some positional changes, Strongbow came out strong in the third quarter with some quick, early intercepts which allowed the shooting combination of Toni Paine and Ashlee McLennon many opportunities to shoot.

Ivorys’ Tracey Patterson and Aimee Stevenson looked for all opportunities to intercept, but Strongbow had found their second wind and began closing the gap. Score at the end of the third quarter was just 27-21.

In the final quarter Strongbows never gave up, with Cyndi Allen taking a number of fantastic intercepts. Although Strongbows’ defence worked hard, the Ivorys’ shooting combination of Tania Ditton and Karen Trstenjak sealed the win for the Ivorys 41-25.
