Jacaranda's gem of a display

THEY may be a small group, working on small-scale pieces, but the work on display this Jacaranda at the Grafton Showground is quite precious.

The Jacaranda Gem Club is holding their annual exhibition for Jacaranda, and this year the group theme is "Gold Mining in Australia'.

"The main display shows off different aspects of gold mining in Australia, and all of our members have contributed to that," member Derek Higgins said.

"There's also displays of jewellery, silversmith, cutting and polishing opals and many other things to see."

The work on display is all created by members of the gem club, and during the festival, many will be on hand to demonstrate their craft.

"We're just finishing up some pieces now for the Jacaranda Queen's party who are coming later," Derek said.

They group has items for sale for the members and Derek said the display had been particularly popular with visitors over the past two years.

"We've noticed a lot of young overseas people coming in and having a good look at the work," he said. "And we've got cabinets of items for sale as well as members selling their own work."

The exhibition runs at the Grafton Showground until Saturday.
