Jamie Oliver's comments causing stir

A UNITED States beef processor is suing the American television network ABC over comments celebrity chef Jamie Oliver made about mince, which he called "pink slime".

Mr Oliver told viewers of his hit TV show Oliver's Food Revolution the "pink slime" was produced using a high-speed centrifuge to separate meat and fat, The Independent reported on Sunday.

The comments sparked a series of hostile news stories on the ABC, which Beef Products claims was a campaign to "destroy this business".

A nation-wide controversy and consumer boycott followed, with US supermarkets removing the product from their shelves.

Beef Products insists the product was safe and healthy, describing it as "finely textured lean beef", The Independent reported.

While Mr Oliver was cited in court documents, he was not listed as a defendant to the court proceedings.
