Jazz and wine festival to hit town

GET set to swing, jive and jazz while enjoying the fine taste of wine when the North Queensland Jazz and Wine Festival comes to town.

Souths Leagues Club will welcome well-known local and travelling jazz bands from 6pm Saturday night, with a seafood buffet and a great selection of wine.

Entertainment includes music from the Jive Bombers (Sydney), the Caxton Street Jazz Band (Brisbane) and the Mackay Big Band.

The popular Jazz breakfast on Sunday will begin from 8.30am with special guest artist Doug Parkinson, along with more entertainment throughout the day, before the event wraps up at 2pm.

Souths Leagues Club manager Kingsley Theiber said it was the first time the event had been held for many years.

“We have a sold out show with 260 people expected for Saturday night and only a limited amount of tickets left for Sunday,” Mr Theiber said.

“The bands performing are well-known among the jazz circles.”

Souths Premier Wine Club will have a host of Brown Brothers and Samuel Smith & Sons wine to taste and enjoy.

Mr Theiber said it was great to see such strong support from local jazz lovers.

“Judging by the response and support from the community, there is obviously a market out there that has been untapped for a long time,” he said.

“Our focus is giving the community what they need and want.”

Mr Theiber said the club was seeking to make an annual event out of the North Queensland Wine and Jazz Festival, if all went well at the weekend.

“It would be great to make this an annual event to take part across three of Souths’ venues as an outdoor event.”

Souths Leagues Club will still be fully operational over the weekend if people want to come in for a drink or meal.
