Jets fly in new man to take up coaching role

FOOTBALL: Former Adelaide United assistant Phil Stubbins has been appointed coach of the Newcastle Jets for the next two A-League seasons.

Stubbins has extensive experience as a head coach, having won five championships in the Victorian state leagues, and has also spent the past two years coaching at the top level in Thailand.

He said he was thrilled to be given the opportunity to coach the Jets, saying his goals would be to "cultivate a clear identity and winning culture" at the club.

"It's a fantastic challenge and I certainly believe in this squad," he said.

Stubbins (pictured) was also a more than handy golfer, securing his Australasian PGA Tour card in 2003 and 2004, although he never played in a tournament.

Former Socceroo Clayton Zane, who took over as Newcastle's interim coach after Gary van Egmond was sacked in January, will stay on as an assistant coach.
