Hip-hop artist takes different approach to East Coast tour

MUSIC is my everything - it's this burning desire and I have to do it."

Sydney hip-hop artist Joel Rafidi has been stripping back his passion and taking the promotion of his debut album to a grassroots level.

He's been on a road trip like no other - busking his way down the East Coast and bringing his music directly to the people.

It's a part-promotional, part-feel-good trip - he gets to bring some happiness to people through his music while promoting his new album directly to the people and through the social media posts he's developing while on the road.

Rafidi impacted commercial radio earlier this year with his breakout single Do It Again, which received extensive radio across the country.

His follow up single I'll Be Good is reaching similar success with immediate radio additions across the country.

Tomorrow he'll release his debut album Phases through MGM - an album that has taken five years to produce.

"This is what I've envisioned for a long time but I haven't been able to create until now," he said.

The album is 100% his heart and soul, and he said it's going to be a great feeling to release it, after years of hard work.

Rafidi was in the region, taking in Byron Bay yesterday before dropping into Lismore today as part of his road-trip.

He said it's been so rewarding to bring his music to the people.

He said one of the best parts of the trip was "making random people on the street happy".

While not a traditional busker, he said bringing his hip-hop sounds to the street was a pretty awesome and different experience.

"I think my songs work really well acoustically," he said.

He'd also been surprised by the support fans and radio stations had given him in the lead-up to the release of Phases.

"The response I've gotten from the radio, I never would have expected," he said.

The support many stations have shown him has been wonderful.

After stopping in Byron Bay he was then heading down to Grafton and Coffs Harbour before making his way to Taree and beyond over the weekend.
