Stay at home dad: Focusing on fatherhood

JOHN Gass doesn't mind if you call him "Daddy Daycare" or "Mr Mum."

In fact, it's a badge he's wearing proudly.

You see John is one of a growing number of guys taking paternity leave to look after the baby while the wife goes back to work.

"The guys always think I'm on a winner. Whistles are blown, streamers are thrown at me," John explains is the usual reaction when people discover he's a stay-at-home dad.

John, an award-winning Daily News photographer, has been on daddy duty for the past month looking after three-month-old baby Connor while wife Louise Bezzina works.

He's taking almost six months in total and so far, John says it's going well.

"When Connor was first born I didn't get to see him much because I was working. In this way it's really good to spend more time with him."

Louise is the festival director of Bleach and Opera on the Beach. She went back to work after three months - they originally planned two, but Connor came early.

And while John's the first to admit he's super tired and not getting much done, he's also already starting to miss work.

"You miss work a bit. That's why I didn't want to do it in the first place. I love work. I'm going to go stir crazy."

John, 43, said Louise, 32, eventually sold him on the idea of being a stay-at-home dad after a few months of convincing and he hasn't looked back.

It helps that Connor has been a model baby.

"He's a very good boy. People just say how cute he is all the time."
