Lower Clarence Eagles U13 AFL

Coffs Swans hosted Lower Clarence Eagles in the U13s semi-finals at Coffs Harbour on Saturday. The top-of-the-ladder clash was expected to be a close tussle in the heavy conditions due to overnight rain.

The game started pretty evenly with both teams going in hard for the ball. The Swans gained the advantage part way through the first quarter with Jake Brown dominating the centre for the Swans although Matt Gordian was winning the ruck. The Swans continued to move the ball into the forward line but a great effort from Michael Carr and the Eagles backline kept the scoring to a minimum.

The Swans continued to dominate the game in the second quarter with a couple of quick goals taking the lead out to 40 points. The Eagles running players, Damien Ashby and Billy Porter dug deep and were able to slow the Swans momentum going into half time.

The Eagles opened the third term strong, scoring first for the quarter. Sam Cashman was moved into the centre to give the Eagles some more run and the Eagles big men, Fletcher Sumner and Matt Gordian worked hard in the ruck. Mackenzie Wright and John Hickey ran the ball well and with impressive skill under wet and slippery conditions. Going into the third break the Eagles had managed to peg back the lead but still had a huge task ahead of them.

In the last quarter the Eagles continued to pressure the in-form Swans who were finding it hard to regain the run and domination they had in the second quarter. The Eagles never gave up the chase and with teamwork and fierce tackling they were able to again restrict the Swans from scoring, while putting some points on the board themselves. It was an outstanding effort but the Eagles weren't able to claw their way back from the Swans four goal second quarter.

Next week's Preliminary final will be between the Sawtell Saints and the Lower Clarence Eagles at Leisure Park, Coffs Harbour.
