Juniors trial for rep basketball

TEN excited junior basketballers are preparing for their shot at the big time after being called in to trial for the North Coast representative teams.

Action at Yamba on Friday decided the players who made Cameron Fishburn’s Richmond zone squad.

The high school students now get a chance to impress at an even higher level today.

Players in the squad ranged from Maclean to Lismore and Casino.

“I was basically looking to pick players to suit each position,” Fishburn said.

“I was looking for players with some height and some speed.”

Fishburn said the improving region could expect some young guns to appear and push for higher selections in the coming seasons.

“In the past the Richmond zone has not been that strong but it’s really improving,” he said.

“The pool of players to pick from with representative basketball experience compared to the other regions is quite small.

“It’s getting stronger each year though. In the past it hasn’t been that big.”

The Richmond squad is seen as a stepping stone to higher honours for any young player.

And Fishburn knows he has the cattle to make a mark when the time comes.

“In a high school level to make a state team you have to make it in this side,” he said.
