Jury to decide if former sportsman is guilty of rape

A FORMER Rockhampton sportsman faces an anxious wait with a jury expected to begin deliberations today  to determine whether he his guilty of raping a woman in the front seat of his car.

The man, who cannot be identified in order to protect the identity of his alleged victim, has pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane District Court to rape, deprivation of liberty and assault with the intent to rape.

It is alleged he raped a woman during the early hours of June 11 last year in the front seat of his car while it was parked in a suburban Brisbane street after they had met earlier in the evening through mutual friends.

The court heard the man offered the woman a lift home from a party after her lift failed to show up.

On the way the woman agreed to have a drink with the man at a hotel located near her house before events allegedly turned nasty after the two left the hotel.

Crown Prosecutor Sarah Dennis told the jury in her closing address what the man did in his car during the early hours of the morning of the day in question was unlawful.

"This man had one purpose in his car that night," she said.

"He wanted to have sex with the woman despite her protests.

"He used force to achieve that aim."

Earlier on Wednesday the lead investigator in the case Detective Senior Constable Tim Everett told the court DNA samples were taken from both the man and the woman and were sent to the Queensland Health forensics unit for analysis.

He said police had also taken the woman's skirt and underwear for forensic analysis but it was never conducted.

Defence barrister Bruce Mumford is expected to address jurors this morning.

Judge Hugh Botting will then address the jury before they retire to consider their verdict.
