Juveniles to wait for riot trial date

NINE juveniles charged with offences including riot and malicious damage over their part in the Valentines Day
Yamba riot will have to wait until May 30 for a trial date to be set.

Police Prosecutor Bob Hanzic told the court he was going to Sydney next week to seek final instructions about the case from his superiors.

Magistrate David Heilpern said he would confirm dates with the chief magistrate before a hearing date is set.

“There is some talk of all August if it is necessary,” he said.

Defence Solicitor Mark Spagnolo questioned whether August was a good time to hold a trial as it coincided with the trial HSC.

"It's not going to fit all counsel and all defendants," Mr Heilpern said.

"We can use Maclean Court again but there is no way I am not going to have a list day there."

Mr Heilpern said having a list day for criminal and civil matters would most likely result in a rest day for the trial.

"It just doesn't work in servicing the needs of a whole town," he said.
