Kalani’s big medal haul at Country Surf titles
YAMBA Surf Life Saving Club Nipper Kalani Ives headlined a top notch performance from the club at the recent Surf Life Saving NSW Country Championships.
With a five-medal swag including three gold in the Under 11 Female Beach Flags, Under 11 Female Board Race and the Under Female Iron Woman events, Kalani put on a strong showing at the event held at South West Rocks.
"She has been a standout performer in the nipper ranks for a couple of years now," Yamba Surf Life Saving Club president Joe Dougherty said. "She will take a lot of confidence out of the weekend's events and her fantastic performance.
"Kalani was probably the standout performer for our club but she was certainly not alone in the medal tallies."
In fact only two competitors from the Yamba contingent failed to medal at the event but did place in the top five for their respective events.
"We did have a very successful time at the country championships," Dougherty said.
"The level of competition at that carnival is extremely high - you are competing against the best competitors in the state outside of metro regions. These are people who will definitely be at the state championships."
"From the club point of view you always want to encourage members to compete at the higher levels, and when they achieve it is something you gain some great satisfaction from."
The Yamba club finished in 10th place on the competition leaderboard after winning eight gold medals, 10 silver medals and 11 bronze medals.
"It is something the whole club can be proud of," Dougherty said.
