Keep ethical with the Joneses
NEW Maclean shop Silk & Oak has opened to satisfy Lisa and Mike Jones's desire to live in an area they loved and sell products that would not weigh on their consciences.
The Joneses recently moved to Maclean from Tasmania but have strong roots in the Clarence Valley.
Mrs Jones said all their products were quality handmade items sourced directly from families
She said her friend 'Bodhi' would travel to Kashmir in North India to source rugs and carpet directly from families.
"She loved the textiles and wanted to pay the people the right money for it," Mrs Jones said.
"They make their own silk and cotton for carpets all hand-made.
"One square foot of carpet and rug takes six hours to weave."
Mrs Jones said Vivian Alder at Metroscope supplies Moroccan ceramics and handmade tea glasses, among other things.
They also sell Tasmanian timber and up-cycled furniture made by Mr Jones, who is a joiner, and put up local artists' work on consignment.
"It is a shop for the people," Mrs Jones said.
"It is a very colourful shop. It feels like a fair trade shop; everyone tells me the atmosphere is very inviting."
The Jones family used to come to the area on holidays and when the children moved to Brisbane, setting up a shop in Maclean was the logical thing to do.
"It is the river and area, we really like it," she said.
"We are close enough to see the kids and far enough from the city.
"My passion is working in a place that I love, and knowing everything I sell, the person the product bought from is getting the right money."
Mrs Jones said they opened just in time for the Christmas rush.
Silk & Oak is on 189a River St, Maclean, phone 6645 3300.
