Kelty surprised by viewer love and hate
DANIEL Kelty is surprised at the response he has received from MasterChef viewers.
The stay-at-home dad never thought he'd be so "polarising".
"I really wasn't expecting it, but there's some real hatred out there for me," Kelty told APN.
"I'm just a dad. I went on there really just being myself, not putting on an act, but I really seem to have polarised people.
"Reading articles online, both Rishi (Desai) and myself seem to be spoken about quite often."
The 35-year-old was eliminated in tonight's "food dream on a plate" challenge.
His twice-cooked pork was dry and the judges found his molasses dressing too overpowering.
"I initially thought the pork shoulder was pork belly; it's hard to tell looking at meat in raw state," he said.
"I liked it and the judges didn't and that's ok. It's the best way to go out. It's not like I served the judges raw chicken."
Kelty is currently setting up his pop-up Dinner at 8 restaurant in his home town of Marrickville in Sydney's Inner West.
"A lot the cafes in my town shut at 5pm, so it's about utilising already existing capital," he said.
"Once the restaurant closes I'll move in and open back up at 8pm.
"The food is going to be a set menu of MasterChef-quality food, maybe some dish I've done on the show. A lot of people watch (the show) and look at a dish and think 'I'd like to try that'."
Kelty tips Desai to win the fifth series of the reality cooking show.
"Rishi has a real determination about him to win this competition," he said.
"If he keeps his head in the game he can definitely take it out."
MasterChef airs Sundays through Thursdays at 7.30pm on Ten.
