Kids keen for hockey

IT WAS fabulous to be down at the hockey fields last Thursday afternoon. The Daily Examiner Primary Schools competition was underway for the first game and the kids had a great time.

Some have been playing for years, but for others it was the first time a mouthguard had been in their mouth.

The kids were beetroot red, but they loved it.

It was all about playing hockey and having fun with school mates or filling in for other schools that were short.

The selectors have been studying the form of the players in under-15s and 18s to select two rep teams in each grade.

The girls are to be congratulated on their skills and training during these trials. Any persons wishing to coach or manage these sides are asked to complete nomination forms and hand them to secretary Janelle Pole or selector Liesa Thompson by Saturday.

The Junior Girls Primary Meeting will be held at the fields on Monday, March 1 at 5pm. All junior girls clubs need to attend to ensure smooth sailing for the season opening.

Team detail forms must have the Hockey NSW Player Registration forms attached to it, when handed to Di, the registrar.

This should ensure stress-free registrations.

Hockey NSW will be running a HockeyEd assessors course and Technical Officials course over the weekend in Coffs Harbour from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

They are seeking nominations for umpire convenors or people who may be interested in becoming accredited umpire assessors under HockeyED.

They are targeting people who are currently active within their association in assessing umpires, specifically at junior level. For more information contact Blake Durance on 02 9764 1911 or blake.d@hockeynsw.com.au.

Clubs are now scouting for players so if you are new to town, have lost your team or just want to join the wonderful world of hockey. If you look good in blue and white you could join the Sailors B-grade team – phone Yvonne on 6649 3275.

Goalies are always in demand – give Kerry Gallagher a call to play for the new look Royals side in AR3 or B-grade (6643 1643).

Marg’s Mixtures – a C-grade side made up of primary girls- needs players and a goalie, so call her on 6642 4008 during the week and 6642 5616 on weekends.

All coaches and managers of under-18 teams are reminded to fill in the Prohibited Employment Declarations again. Forms are on the website and have been emailed to club secretaries. Free online training regarding child protection, discrimination and harassment can be found at www.playbytherules.net.au.

I am sure by now everyone has thought about training. Those walks should have progressed to jogs – but don’t get so breathless that you can’t talk. After the council clean up is over, the next job on the list, is to dig the hockey sticks out of the cupboards.

Send in your hockey news to robndave@aapt.net.au Hoo-roo!
