Mum and son killed in island paradise

AN Australian woman and her young son have been stabbed to death in their home on a Pacific island paradise.

Sarah Moses, 46, and her son Jack were killed in a pre-dawn attack in their home at Betio, Kiribati, a small country of 110,000 people.

Ms Moses was a senior public servant who held roles in the Treasury in Tasmania as well as senior positions in the public service of several small Pacific countries, including Nauru.

Local police are treating their deaths as a domestic violence incident. A member of her extended family has been arrested in connection with the deaths.

Ms Moses husband, Nauruan man Bryce Moses, changed his Facebook profile to a picture of the pair on Saturday and overnight added a special Christmas border to the mother-son portrait.

Friends reacted to the news with horror.

"Our deepest condolences and love Bro ... we had to make sure this brainless animal gets what he deserves," one wrote.

Another said: "Deepest condolences to you my friend, it's sad to hear that your wife and son has been taken from you ... be strong my friend, and hope they caught the b*****d already ...

A friend said the person who killed the pair must have "no heart" and said the "stupid person" must be thrown "to hell".

The couple were married in 2013.

Ms Moses' funeral on Tuesday was reportedly attended by the Kiribati President Taneti Maamau, Australian High Commissioner Bruce Cowled and several cabinet ministers.

Tasmania's Department of Premier and Cabinet secretary Jenny Gale said Ms Moses was a much-loved colleague.

"She worked for a number of years in both Treasury and the Department of Education. This will come as shocking news to many in our community and our thoughts are with her family and friends."

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said its staff were providing assistance to Ms Moses' family.
