Man jailed for targeting 13-year-old on Facebook

A MAN who kissed a 13-year-old girl and told her she was a "smoking-hot babe" will spend the next four months in jail after he was convicted of a number of child sex offences.

The man, whose identity has been suppressed to protect the identity of his victim, was found guilty on two charges of indecent assault of a girl aged under 16 and one of procuring a child for unlawful sexual activity.

The man, who was 40 when the incidents occurred in 2013, was also sentenced on a number of other charges to which he had pleaded guilty, including possession of pornographic images.

He also pleaded guilty to filming persons in a private act after police discovered images of children photo-graphed at his home without their knowledge.

The man also pleaded guilty to a number of fire-arms offences after police uncovered unlicensed fire-arms, including silencers, during a search of the man's property.

In Grafton Local Court on Wednesday counsel for the defence questioned the young victim at length, intimating the man's actions had been an attempt to boost the girl's confidence and self-esteem.

The defence also attempted to play down the significance of the accused kissing the young girl twice.

The accused described the kisses as little more than "pecks" to encourage the girl and they were not sexual in nature.

But the young girl, although initially unsure of how to describe the kisses, eventually labelled the first a "pash".

On the witness stand the accused admitted to kissing the girl twice but disagreed with her description of the contact.

Under cross examination the man admitted his actions were not appropriate but maintained he had been trying to help the girl.

When sentencing, Magistrate Jeff Linden described the accused's account as "unbelievable".

Mr Linden described a series of Facebook posts to the girl, on an account intended only for the man and the girl to see, as an "avalanche" of contact.

He said the nature of much of the language used left him in no doubt the accused was preparing the girl for sexual conduct in the future.

The man was sentenced to 15 months jail with a non-parole period of four months for the two sexual assaults.

The jail terms for the other offences are to be served concurrently.
