Kmart’s $59 cult item sells out instantly
Nothing creates an internet frenzy like a cult bargain homewares item (or a photo of Kim Kardashian pouring champagne onto her own butt).
And for years now, good ol' Kmart has delivered some of the buzziest bargains around. Remember the Scandi shoe rack, the $29 marble table and the $8 fringe cushion?
Two weeks ago furniture fans got a sneak peek of the new Kmart February Living range when a blogger shared an image of a very photogenic $59 occasional chair.
Zoe Gilpin from The DIY Decorator managed to get her hands on one early and shared it with her followers on Instagram:

Me: I'm not getting anything from the new @kmartaus home release... Also me: Ooh that plant stand ($19) and chair ($49) live with me now 🙌 #damnyoukmart Impressed with the chair. It's quite light but sturdy and looks fab! . . #thediydecorator #kmartaus #kmartstyle #kmartnewfinds #kmartbargains #kmartmums #kmartmumsaustralia #kmarthome #homedecor #homewares #homedecorating #interior #interiordecor #homedecorator #interiorinfluencer #homeinfluencer #perthinfluencer #lifestyleinfluencer #australianinfluencer #interiordecorator #interiorandhome #interiorlover #kmartaddict #kmartaddictsunite #kmartaustralia #kmartdecor #kmartliving #kmartlove
The next thing, Kmart stores around the country were fielding enquiries about the timber chair, and the accompanying $19 bamboo pot holder in Gilpin's photo … which subsequently sold out online.
On Tuesday media officially got a sneak peek at the new February Living range, which will officially drop in stores and online on January 31 (though some items have already landed).
Some of Kmart's key homewares buyers and designers were in attendance at the preview and pointed out the items they tip to be best-sellers this season.
The grey velvet bedhead ($79)
This is in stores already and has created a lot of buzz within fan pages such as Kmart Mums Australia, with some describing it as a "unicorn" item that will sell out quickly.
As Meryn Serong, Kmart's home divisional merchandise manager said: "The bedhead went nuts online today. Bedheads are a new thing for us. They are a big trend at the moment but they tend to be really expensive, so our challenge was to create one that looks great but is still really affordable. We spent a lot of time getting the right price point."
The terrazzo table ($29)
As we mentioned before, there was an awful lot of fuss over Kmart's $29 marble table this time last year. In 2019 they have done away with the marble and updated with a terrazzo top. It's remained at the $29 price point and we can only imagine there will be a similar level of interest in this updated model.
The Kmart teamed it with its viral timber chair and we have to say, it looks great.
Velvet occasional chair ($59)
This seems to be the item that people are genuinely losing their minds over. It's already sold out online, which comes as little surprise as we know how popular a reasonably priced occasional chair can be.
If you really want to go all out there's a lilac velvet bench ($49) that you can team with it.
Side note: Kmart has also released a grey velvet occasional chair for those too tough for lilac.
Leaning storage mirror with bamboo frame ($49)
This doesn't seem to have landed in stores yet but there has already been a lot of interest in it on Instagram. It's bound to be a highly sought after item thanks to its practicality.

The Timeless drinks trolley ($45)
This one is available now and was a real statement piece at the preview. As we know, Deco is big at the moment and this is an affordable way to get a bit of the 1920s into your home.
The Eden cushion ($12)
Cushions have been a big seller for Kmart's homewares division over the past few years - which comes as little surprise, as they are a super affordable way to change up a room. In the past there was the iconic knot cushion that people were practically scratching one another's eyes out for and the $8 fringed number that had a waiting list around the country.
The statement cushion this season is the colourful 'Eden' cushion in the middle of this picture. It ticks all the boxes for a big seller - boldly coloured, textured, and below the $15 mark. Be prepared to get into a fist-fight for this one.
