Knights sign Tupou to replace Sims

THE Newcastle Knights have extended the NRL career of former Test forward Anthony Tupou.

The 33-year-old has signed a 12-month contract with the Knights, who will rely on his experience to help cover the unexpected exit of senior figures Jarrod Mullen and Korbin Sims this season.

A Newcastle local junior, Tupou moved to the Sydney Roosters in 2004 before then joining the Cronulla Sharks in 2009.

Tupou played 125 games over seven seasons at the Sharks before departing at the end of 2015 to take up a two-year deal with Super League outfit Wakefield.

A former NSW and Australian representative back-rower, Tupou played 18 games for Wakefield, scoring four tries before being recently released due to homesickness.

Tupou began training with the Knights this week and will push to play in the club's last pre-season trial against the Canberra Raiders on February 18.
