Kostjasyn faces throat surgery

Experienced Newcastle recruit Rory Kostjasyn may face three months on the sidelines and will not find out until Wednesday when he can have surgery after a freak training accident a fortnight ago.

Having fractured cartilage in his throat when struck by an accidental elbow during an opposed session, the 29-year-old former North Queensland Cowboy has been forced to rest and been limited to whispering due to the swelling around the injury.

He will see a specialist on Wednesday to learn when he can have surgery to repair the damage.

"At the moment they can't touch it, simply because it is so swollen,” Newcastle high performance manager Tony Ayoub said.

"If it can settle down, he can have the surgery sooner rather than later.

"They will have to decide whether they can relocate that dislocated cartilage or put an implant in.

"At the moment, it is probably looking like 12 weeks before he can play.”

Youngster Danny Levi will likely start in the No.9 jersey.

Jarrod Mullen had been spending time training at dummy-half, but those plans were likely put to rest when the veteran was handed a provisional suspension last week for allegedly testing positive to an anabolic steroid.

It has been a horror period for the club, with interchange forward Pauli Pauli hospitalised last week after dislocating a hip in a car crash.

Last year's wooden spooners then released forward Korbin Sims from the final year of his contract on Friday.
