Labor on knife’s edge, but Cairns MP gets support

CAIRNS MP Rob Pyne's decision to resign from the Labor party and turn independent - leaving the Queensland Government and the LNP with 42 seats each - has been praised by two prominent lobby groups.

GetUp and the Australian Marine Conservation Society have congratulated Mr Pyne for taking a stance against Labor's support for Adani's Carmichael mine, which he says is incompatible with protecting the Great Barrier Reef and tackling climate change.

"He's right. Massive new coalmines are not the way forward when we should be moving towards renewables," GetUp campaigner Ellen Roberts said.

"The Queensland Government's support for the Carmichael mine is creating a headache for them, not just with voters in Brisbane but across Queensland, including in the north. Polling has consistently shown that Queenslanders want to see a shift away from coal and towards renewable energies."

The AMCS said Pyne's concerns for the reef were in line with the views of the vast majority of Queenslanders.

"Queenslanders want the reef protected ... and the 69,000 jobs that depend on it," AMCS spokeswoman Imogen Zethoven said.

"The economic and environmental case to reject new coalmines in favour of renewables is undeniable."

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is not ruling out an early poll, but Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg has said the LNP will not force one.

Mr Pyne said he would not support a no-confidence motion against the government.
