IPSWICH'S newest football team will hit the field for its first official game on Saturday night, but if you like big, beefy blokes bashing each other, this team isn't for you.

The Western Miners, the Ipswich-based team in the new Ladies Football League, will take on the Brisbane Thunder at Grange-Thistle Soccer Club in the inaugural game of the ladies-only gridiron league.

The team includes 25 women from Ipswich, Springfield, Western Brisbane and Greenbank, many who also play women's rugby league, touch football or other sports.

League founder Tala Schultz is excited the season has finally arrived.

"I'm ecstatic it's finally here," Ms Schultz said.

"We've had a few exhibition games, most recently at the Jets, but this is the real thing."

The gridiron games will follow the format of the Lingerie Football League in America, albeit without the skimpy outfits.

The game at Grange will be followed by the first regular season game in Ipswich at Brother Seery Park, Raceview on August 19.

The games form part of an eight round season that also includes the Gold Coast Wild Angels and the Logan Thunder.

Ms Schultz said she hoped people in Ipswich would embrace the new team.

"We've been working with a lot of football teams to share facilities and also play our games as curtain raisers to local games," she said.

"We are playing before the Fassifern v Brothers match next weekend, so I hope plenty of extra people come along to enjoy something a bit different."
