Late drama as Petratos reneges on Newcastle deal

FOOTBALL: Newcastle Jets' recruitment for next season has taken a blow, with Brisbane winger Dimitri Petratos signing a deal to move to Korea instead of the Hunter.

In a bizarre twist, it's believed Petratos will join Ulsan Hyundai immediately, subject to a medical and agreeing personal terms, and as a result won't play for Brisbane against Shanghai SIPG on Wednesday night in the Asian Champions League.

Petratos and his brother Kosta both signed deals less than two weeks ago to switch to Newcastle next season, with Dimitri quoted as saying he wanted to be closer to his family in Sydney.

Under the terms of the deal, agreed by all parties, Brisbane will sell Petratos for an undisclosed transfer fee, and Newcastle will receive a share of that as compensation for agreeing to let the player rescind his contract.

Dimitri Petratos is expected to move to Korea with immediate effect.

Asked to comment on the move, Petratos's agent, Tony Rallis, said only: "I don't like to talk about things that are pending, it's a delicate process."

The signing of Dimi Petratos was seen as a significant coup for Jets coach Mark Jones, adding more youthful firepower to an attack already featuring the likes of Andrew Hoole and Andrew Nabbout.
