Laura crowned Maclean Showgirl
WHEN she was announced as the 2011 Maclean Showgirl, Laura Towell covered her mouth in shock, and then pride and exhilaration kicked in as she stepped forward to be sashed.
The 19-year-old aspiring veterinary nurse was awarded the title ahead of fellow contestants Charlotte Headon, Sigourney Hoy, Stephanie Smith and Natasha Lovell
“I did not expect to win but it is such a great honour to be named Maclean Showgirl for 2011,” she said.
Wiping tears from her eyes when she sat down after receiving her sash from last year's winner, Imogen Porter, Laura said she was still trying to fathom the enormity of her achievement.
“I would like to thank my family and friends. They have been such a great support,” she said.
Talking to The Daily Examiner after the ceremony Laura said she was very nervous when her name was announced but thrilled about snaring the coveted crown.
“The main thing I was nervous about was giving the speech,” she said.
Her fellow contestants congratulated her as the reality of her next 12 months representing the district sunk in.
“It is a great honour and it is still sinking in ... it's such a surprise,” she said.
“I hope to do my best as a rural ambassador in representing my district in the forthcoming shows,” she said.
Laura said she encouraged other girls to follow in her footsteps when nominations open for the 2012 Showgirl.
“Even if I didn't receive the title of Miss Showgirl, the experience of entering has been confidence-building,” she said.
“I would encourage girls in our district to enter future shows because it helps you grow in confidence and it sure tests your comfort zone.”
