Lee swims to global glory

DAVID Lee has come home triumphant from Liguria in Italy with a gold, silver and bronze medals in his bag.

The disabled swimmer was part of the Australian swim team at the Global Games.

He swam in the S14 category at the games.

Lee said he didn't swim any personal best times but he was happy with his performance overall.

"Yeah, my swims weren't great," Lee said.

"I was just off my personal best."

Lee swam in five individual events, finishing fourth in the 200m backstroke, 12th in the 200m freestyle, 13th in the 100m freestyle, eighth in the 50m backstroke and 14th in the 100m backstroke.

Lee won his medals in the relay events with fellow Australian swimmers.

He and his team won gold in the 4x50m freestyle relay, silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay and bronze in the 4x200m relay. It was Lee's second Global Games.

The previous Global Games in 2009, at the Czech Republic, he won two gold and one silver. He said he enjoyed the trip to Italy even though it was a long one.

"It was 25 hours on a plane and three hours on a bus," Lee said. "But it was with a good bunch of people."

The Gold Fins swimmer was at club night at the Mem

orial Pool when The Gympie Times caught up with him.

The 24-year-old has been a member of the Gympie club since he was 10 and can't keep away from the pool.

He said he wasn't sure what his future held at the moment but was giving his body a bit of a rest after the games.

"I am going to slow down the swimming for the time being. I might think about getting into coaching."
