July Carnival off and racing

AND they’re off!

The 2010 July Racing Carnival kicks off today with the Westlawn Finance Prelude Day providing an exciting first event on this year’s schedule.

Westlawn Finance investment manager Helen Commerford said the day would be a fantastic introduction to this year’s carnival.

She expected a large crowd, especially given entry to the track is free for all punters. Although Westlawn Finance Prelude day will have plenty to keep the adults amused, Mrs Commerford said the day was also being aimed at children and families.

“Because it’s school holidays, we have a lot of things on for children, in particular the Byron Bay Kidz Club, which the kids just love. It’s great entertainment for them,” she said.

“We want it to be a day for the locals where they can just get out and enjoy it.”

Mrs Commerford said one of the key features of today’s meeting – free entry – was designed to give everyone a chance to get involved in the July Carnival.

“There’s a lot of people who can’t really afford to go and do everything they’d like to and by having this event free of charge, they can come along and just enjoy the day out,” Mrs Commerford said.

Another highlight of today’s event will be a black and gold-themed fashion sweepstakes for the adults and a fashion show for children.

“The fashion sweepstakes is always a lot of fun,” Mrs Commerford said.

Along with prizes being given out in the sweepstakes for the adults, there will also be a prize for all children participating in the children’s fashion show.

Mrs Commerford said people attending today’s event should also wear a hat for a chance to win a great prize.

“By wearing a hat to Westlawn Day, you become eligible to fill out an entry form to win a weekend for two at the beautiful Crown Plaza at Pelican Waters on the Sunshine Coast,” Mrs Commerford said. “It’s a great prize, it’s worth over $1000.”

Westlawn Finance Prelude day kicks off at 11am at the Grafton racecourse.

The carnival continues on Sunday with the Coffs Coast Prestige Ladies Day; Ramornie Day on Wednesday; Grafton Cup Day next Thursday, and; concludes with the Maclean Bowling Club Family Day on Sunday, July 18.
