Letter to the Editor - Friday, May 9: Crying wolf

HERE'S a good idea. We've been elected on the basis of a totally negative campaign of slogans and, of course we, as the legitimate economic managers of the country will find the nation in a parlous state.

We'll do the usual 'cry wolf' about any spending programs, and as it is what the household managers understand, we'll harp about a deficit, its size and importance. As well, we'll appoint our business, free enterprise market-driven mates, call them auditors and await the inevitable unpalatable set of outcomes they will recommend.

These will be so draconian that when we come up with our own response in the real budget it will look almost acceptable.

As for election promises, they're always smoke and mirrors. It's worked before, why shouldn't it work again?
