Letter to the Editor - Monday, November 11: Jobs reality

WHERE is our country heading, Westinghouse company closing Orange, Caterpillar jobs closing Burnie and Qantas jobs going at Avalon?

It is all inevitable I suppose, companies having to pay higher superannuation, high OH&S requirements, high costs to comply with environmental conditions. We are not playing on an even playing field here. I cannot understand why our governments never want to support companies to stay in Australia.

Would it not be better to sponsor companies that employ people who pay taxes in Australia than to pay people who have no work unemployment benefits? The problem is economists only see loss of jobs as a finite dollar value. They do not take into consideration the extended socioeconomic problems that job loses have, especially in regional areas.

We here in Grafton have been gutted - there is not much left here in Grafton only pensioners and the unemployed.

Unfortunately there is not much the council or any others can do about it.

We have had our good times, we have to accept reality.
