Letter to the Editor - Friday, December 6: Spot on comment

WEDNESDAY'S 'comment' by Shannon Newley was to the point and would no doubt go down well with older generations who were schooled in the days when reading, writing and arithmetic were the three essential subjects pupils strived to conquer.

If you could not spell, you could not read well and basic numeracy was vital in those pre-calculator days.

Although the original so-called Gonski scheme suffered some butchery to suit Gillard's Labor government ideology, some of the basics are commendable and when the new Education Minister Chris Pyne brings his own policy improvements into being, regarding teacher education, autonomy in schools and changes to the curriculum then Australia's education system can finally lift itself out of the bog it finds itself in.
