Liam Hemsworth: It makes sense to be vegan
TWO years after announcing his veganism to the world, Liam Hemsworth has been named Australia's sexiest vegan celebrity.
The Hollywood actor shares the title with gender illusionist and Ru Paul's Drag Race star Courtney Act with the title announced by PETA today.
"A staggering number of celebrities went vegan in 2017, so it's been harder than ever to crown Australia's Sexiest Vegan Celebrities," PETA said in a statement. "In the end, there were two who stood out - not just for being sexy but, more importantly, for speaking up for animals: Liam Hemsworth and Courtney Act."
Hunger Games star Hemsworth, 27, won the PETA US version of the award last year and in 2017 continued his plight, encouraging his millions of followers on social media to watch documentary What The Health.
"If you care about your health, animal welfare or the planet we all live on, you must watch this documentary," wrote Hemsworth, whose girlfriend Miley Cyrus is also vegan.
Hemsworth's Hunger Games co-star Woody Harrelson inspired the Australian to become vegan.
"Having grown up with a love for and connection to all animals, and having been educated on the health benefits of a plant-based diet, it only made sense for me to go vegan," he said in an interview. "My own health, and after all the information I gathered about the mistreatment of animals, I couldn't continue to eat meat. The more I was aware, the harder and harder it was to do. So with the facts I was gathering, and then just how I was physically feeling, I felt like I had to do something different, so I adopted this vegan-diet lifestyle."
Meanwhile, Courtney Act - real name Shane Jenek - this year launched an online series called Cooking With Courtney in which she shares her vegan recipes.
"It's better for me, better for the environment, and better for the animals," she has said.
Other celebrity vegans include The Veronicas, Ruby Rose, David Campbell and Bridget Malcolm.
Like Courtney Act, The Veronicas are also planning on sharing their vegan food highlights.
They revealed to Confidential earlier this year that they are working on a vegan cookbook.
"It surprises people probably because we are touring so much that they think we don't have time to cook, but we are always checking in to apartments and obviously when we are at home in LA we are cooking non stop."
Lisa added of the vegan cookbook: "It is all our favourite recipes."
Asked if they ever crave meat, the pair say they opt for creative alternatives.
"Coconut bacon, it is unreal," Jess advised.
"After you give up meat for about a week, you don't really crave it anymore. It is really an incredible thing."
The Veronicas were in Sydney last week promoting new single The Only High and this weekend shoot the video clip for the track in London.
"It is a very powerful story, an old classic story that we are doing in a new way," they said.
And earlier this year, actor Teresa Palmer spoke to Confidential of her and her families vegan lifestyle.
"We decided as a family that veganism fitted best with our philosophy and views on the world."
