Live exports move
FEDERAL Page MP Janelle Saffin has lodged a motion before Federal Parliament calling for a move away from live meat exports.
The motion, which has not been voted on, asks the House of Representatives to call for “renewed consideration” for Australia to make a transition away from live exports in the medium term.
It asks the House to note the Government’s jurisdiction over live meat exports, the existence of tariffs in other countries working against frozen meat exports and ‘national and international concerns’ about the practice.
In her motion, Ms Saffin said live exports are opposed by the Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union, and asks for international trade negotiator Austrade to push for higher exports of frozen and chilled meat.
