LIVE: Hockeyroos bow out of Rio 2016

LATEST: Unable to bridge the gap against New Zealand, Australia has gone down in tonight's quarter-final and bowed out of Rio 2016.

In her second Olympics appearance, Sunshine Coast hockey product Jodie Kenny will again come home without a medal after finishing fifth at London 2012.

After a slow start to the competition, Australia finished third in Pool B to progress to the sudden death rounds, while New Zealand finished second in Pool A.

New Zealand went on the front foot from the opening minute and never slowed down.

They would take a 2-0 lead into half time.

Australia struck back through Kathryn Slattery, but goals to Charlotte Harrison and Gemma Flynn made it 4-1.

Slattery would score a second goal with less than two minutes on the clock, but it was all too late.

It was just New Zealand's second win in the two sides' last six meetings.
