Lock the Gate claims hand in Green swing

ANTI-CSG activists Lock the Gate Alliance have claimed some of the credit for The Greens' likely election triumphs on the North Coast.

The group's national director Phil Laird emailed supporters to say there had been a "political earthquake" he put down to "this incredible social movement we've created together".

"The most unprecedented and extraordinary outcome of this election are swings of up to 30% directly from the National Party to the Greens in the Northern Rivers," he said.

"It was a referendum on CSG in the Northern Rivers, and the National Party was found wanting.

"For the first time ever in Australian political history, they have lost seats directly to the Greens.

"Ballina has shifted, whilst Lismore is still hanging in the balance, waiting on pre-poll votes to be counted."

It is worth noting the count in both Lismore and Ballina is incomplete. ABC election analyst Antony Green is tipping a Greens win in Ballina; however, the NSW Electoral Commission is offering no indication of the likely outcome of the two-party-preferred count and the Nationals are not conceding in either seat.

Mr Laird said strides were also made outside the state's north, with Wyong and Campbelltown going to Labor and Gosford hanging in the balance after the ALP opposed a Central Coast coal mine proposal and promised to ban CSG in those seats.

"Even in seats that didn't change hands, the swings against the NSW Government were mostly largest in regional electorates where our movement is strongest," he said.

"Seats like Clarence, Upper Hunter and Barwon all saw close to 20% swings against sitting members.

"There have been many promises made, and there is now an incredible momentum for change.

"We can't wait to get cracking and start the next phase of our movement together in NSW, and right across the country."
