Lonely souls catered for this Christmas
A CLARENCE Valley mother and daughter want to make sure no one in the region is forced to miss out on sharing in the Christmas spirit.
Anne Hewitt and her mother, Pat are busy organising a Christmas Picnic in the Park for Grafton people who find themselves alone on Christmas Day or who are unable to afford to celebrate and would like to have somewhere to go.
"A lot of people need help every day, but I can't help them with that," Ms Hewitt said.
"But we can do something for one day of the year, and that's what Mum and I are working towards."
Ms Hewitt is planning a Christmas picnic in Market Square, Grafton, from noon to 2pm on Christmas Day.
"The New School of Arts in South Grafton has their Christmas lunch, but there's nothing like that over this side of the river," Ms Hewitt said.
"The New School of Arts knows what we're doing and they're behind us all the way."
The Hewitt's Christmas picnic will consist of a sausage sizzle with a selection of salads followed by dessert.
"We're talking with businesses to see what they can donate, because everything we have has to be donated," she said. "Absolutely no money will be able to change hands."
Ms Hewitt said she would like to hear from people who can help out in whatever way they think possible.
"We've only just started to organise this, so the more help we can get from the local community, the better," she said.
