Lucinda’s talent blows them away

WHEN clarinet player Lucinda Bell made the traditional squeaky start associated with that instrument as an eight-year-old, she never imagined that six years later she'd be standing on the stage of the Sydney Opera House showcasing her progress to one of the most respected orchestras in the world.

Last week the 14-year-old student of the Clarence Valley Conservatorium attended a two-day workshop at the iconic landmark with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, regarded by many to be the best in business.

"It was an amazing feeling," Lucinda said of the unforgettable moment.

"To be up close and see the control that those musicians have over the music is a real experience.

"It's really inspired me to keep improving my music."

The trip was a part of the Regional Conservatorium's workshop and students from across the state were mentored by the internationally acclaimed players, culminating in a short concert playing alongside some of the orchestra.

"We were tutored by the head flute player in a woodwind workshop," Lucinda said.

"And the assistant conductor took us through and gave us some tips on orchestral playing, which is something I've never done before."

Lucinda said she played the clarinet most days, whether in practice or playing at the Conservatorium.

"It's a very technical instrument but I really enjoy the challenges the instruments and the songs provide for me."
