Lynch saves Brothers from clutches of despair

NIGHT CRICKET: Jarrod Lynch negotiated tricky conditions to produce a match-winning knock for Clocktower Hotel Brothers in Cleavers Night Cricket.

Afternoon showers meant teams were greeted with a wet McKittrick Park surface and Grafton Hotel Coutts Crossing skipper Bill North gleefully sent his opposition into bat.

The move immediately dividends with opening bowler Zac Page (3 for 20 off 5) masterfully utilising the conditions as the uneven bounce caused headaches for the top order.

Joel Gossen (3 for 19 off 5) continued the tumble of wickets to have Brothers reeling at 6 for 34.

But just as Coutts looked to be setting up to chase a low total, Lynch saved Brothers from the clutches of despair.

In a timely return to form, he sized up the situation to perfection, patiently getting himself in before upping the runrate in a 78-run unbeaten 8th wicket stand with Troy McLaren.

Lynch hit 10 boundaries in his 68 not out while McLaren added salt into the wounds with a four and a six of the last two balls of the innings to finish 31 not out.

The target of 7 for 148 was always going to be a difficult chase, but it looked increasingly insurmountable after Jake Kroehnert (1 for 9 off 5) and Dylan Lucas (1 for 10 off 5) restricted scoring opportunities to have Coutts 2 for 19 off the first 10 overs.

Mitch Kroehnert (3 for 16 off 5) put a further dint in the Coutts armoury and ss the required runrate crept up to eight an over a last ditch 37-run 7th wicket effort between Adam Elliott (28) and North (13) provided the last glimmer of hope.

Ben Jurd (2 for 14 off 5) put paid to both batsmen as they looked to hit out, leaving Gossen (13no) and Page (11no) to put on an unbeaten 25 runs for Coutts to finish 9 for 102, refusing to give their wickets away as minor consolation.

The contest was the last Night Cricket match prior to the venue hosting the upcoming McDonalds Country Plate and Cup semi-finals.

The next round will be held held on January 11 between Jacaranda Hotel Westlawn and GDSC Easts.
