Maclean's ready to revamp

A FINELY-TUNED stance on the proposed Maclean riverside revamp is proof the township is taking ownership of its future.

That was the message from Maclean Chamber of Commerce last night after its last discussion before Monday's public meeting.

At that meeting the chamber will argue the concept of the River St view corridor should be dropped from the overall plan.

If the overall plan is accepted as is, it could mean at least one property would be removed with little or no benefit, he said.

In the 20 minutes the chamber will have to address the meeting next week, it will also present its concept plans for the entrance to Maclean.

"There was discussion of some $300,000 being in the budget of Clarence Valley Council, allocated to the boulevard or entrance to Maclean," the spokesman said.

"The chamber has drawn up concept plans that we presented to the public meeting and we are keen for those plans to go forward and for this to be the starting point of the development."

The chamber will argue the Fisheries must be relocated to a more appropriate location with the levee wall in the central business district also moved and replaced with open gates so as to not impede the views.

"This is further evidence of the people of Maclean taking ownership of the river plan," he said.

Consultants Clouston Associates said in their 131-page draft paper that was released late last year and opened to community consultation, the plan would "reconnect" the township to the river with a mix of public and private open space and development.

The public meeting starts at 5.30pm on Monday April 23 at Maclean Returned Services Club, River St.
