Shark attack: Man, 65, on surf ski suffers leg injuries

A MAN on a surf ski has suffered leg injuries in a shark attack at Blackhead Beach on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

Surf Life Saving NSW said the 65-year-old was on a surf ski at the time of the attack, the ABC reported.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene.

There was conflicting reports of the severity of his injuries.

Fairfax quoted ambulance officials saying he had a severe leg injury.

The ABC quoted police saying they were superficial injuries.

It comes after a surfer was mauled to death in the Ballina area in February and 11 others have been attacked in recent months on the NSW north coast.

Initial reports said the attack happened at Hallidays Point, north of Forster/Tuncurry.

The attack happened about 11.45am.

WHY SHARK NETS AREN'T THE ANSWER

The Newcastle Herald reported that the rescue helicopter was enroute to the area.

Yesterday a fisherman reported an encounter with a shark off Long Reef on Sydney's northern beaches.

There has been a string of attacks on NSW beaches, prompting calls for a cull of sharks and better protection for swimmers.
